Art Is All Around Us
David Bierk (1944-2002 | American Canadian)
David Bierk is an American-born artist who emigrated to Canada in the early ’70s. As an artist active in the community, Bierk was a part of many solo and group exhibitions, his art becoming popular for challenging peoples’ views on culture and history. His works involve appropriating other artists' imagery as a part of his practice. He would recreate, or use photographs, of old master’s paintings such as DaVinci, Vermeer, Manet and Van Gogh. Bierk would incorporate these images onto a wood board or canvas and juxtapose them next to thin sheets of steel, current art magazine covers or planes of thick oil paint that compliment the imagery. This work prompts much reflection. His recreations of the renaissance masters, placed with modern materials such as steel and contemporary imagery, create tension between the ideas of what used to be, and what is now modern ideals.
