Job Title: Art Instructor, Canada Summer Jobs

Job Summary
The Art Gallery of Algoma (AGA) is seeking to fill two Art Instructor positions funded through Canada Summer Jobs, Service Canada. The Art Instructor position provides the opportunity for youth to gain experience in teaching art, organizational skills, planning art classes, people skills, and management and co-operative working skills. Art Instructors will lead classes and teach art to children 5 – 9 years old and 10 – 14 years old. Training, support, and supervision will be provided by the AGA staff.
Art Instructors will be responsible for creating lesson plans, teaching in-person in the AGA’s Art Studio, assembling supplies for each class, sharing any relevant information with parents/guardians, promoting the classes with AGA staff. Other educational programs and/or activities will be explored if possible. Part of the job will be maintaining the art studio supplies and cleanliness.
The ideal candidate will have previous experience teaching and working with children, be a post-secondary student in fine arts and/or art history, teaching certification or studies (knowledge of educational approaches, especially in arts education, will be highly beneficial) and/or early childhood education. The applicants’ previous administration of artistic education, especially to children, will be considered an asset. Creativity and energy are a must. Candidates should be looking to gain experience teaching art and working in a gallery or museum setting.
Computer skills include proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point), web based social media tools (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube). Candidates should be fluent in English (written and spoken).
Successful Candidates will be required to complete a current criminal record check and vulnerable sector police screening.
Candidates will be required to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Art Gallery of Algoma (AGA) is seeking a Tourism Industry Consultant, funded through Canada Summer Jobs, Service Canada. This position provides the opportunity to gain knowledge about marketing, design, customer service, and art.
The successful candidates will gain knowledge about customer service and art, with a focus on Canadian historical and contemporary art. The Candidate will learn about exhibitions on display and art classes/workshops/talks offered at the AGA, including special events and all other programming – in-person and/or virtual. The Candidate will provide tours offered at the Gallery including sculpture park, tourism offerings in the city, and will learn how to use a Point-of-Sale (POS) System for admissions and sales in the Gallery Shop, gaining administrative skills, customer service, and marketing skills.
Summary of duties include the following: greet visitors to the AGA; provide information about exhibitions on display and the AGA’s permanent collection; promote programming and events offered at the AGA; assist in the Gallery Shop; assist with public relations and communication; create posters and other promotional materials; update social media sites and assist with fundraising efforts. The Tourism Industry Consultant will take required information from all visitors according to the AGA funding requirement. The Candidate will conduct tours offered by the Gallery on an as needed basis and as per information provided by the Gallery staff. The Tourism Industry Consultant will maintain reports to provide status of their work and the accurate number of visitors to the Gallery each day.
The preferred Candidate will have education and/or experience within arts, design, marketing, public relations, customer service, business administration and the not-for-profit sector. Computer skills are mandatory including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Photoshop), and knowledge of social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube).
