The History of the Art Gallery of Algoma

Incorporated on July 7, 1975, the Art Gallery of Algoma was established by the following first Board of Directors:

Executive Members:

1st Vice                   Dr. Robert Martin
2nd Vice                  Mrs. Marilyn Guerriero
Secretary                Mrs. Ann Algie
Treasurer                Mr. Ian Mitchell

Board Members:
Mr. Bayne Boyes               Mr. Nick Hirt                      Mrs. Rhona McLarty
Mr. Hugh Harris                Mr. William Hogg              Mr.  Rudy Peres
Mr. Alex Harry                   Mr. James Kelleher

Honourary President:  Mayor Nicholas Trbovich

The Art Gallery of Algoma opened its doors to the public  on June 20, 1976 in a temporary space. The Gallery became a reality based on the ideals of celebrating culture, educating visitors and enriching lives through the visual arts.  Through the tireless efforts of the Board of Directors and volunteers on September 6, 1980, the Gallery moved to its present location near the St. Mary’s River. The Gallery’s 10,000 square foot facility is home to two large exhibition spaces, a multi-purpose area, an education area that hosts workshops, demonstrations and art classes and a gallery gift shop.

Today, the Art Gallery of Algoma’s vision is to be a premiere visual arts institution in Northern Ontario.  The Gallery will continue to establish and implement new initiatives, become more involved on the national contemporary arts and uphold our multi faceted mandate. The Gallery will continue to grow and build on the original ideals of celebrating culture, educating visitors and enhancing lives through the visual arts.
