Art Is All Around Us
Lorne Wagman (1957 | Canadian)
Wagman was born in North York, Ontario, and was involved in the arts even at a very young age. He begun to take his art practice more seriously in 1971 and has been exhibiting his work in Toronto galleries since. Influenced by artists such as Emily Carr, Vincent Van Gogh and the Group of Seven, Wagman is well known for his landscape work, where his subjects are intimate and modest focusing on regions he is familiar with rather than exploring novel scenery and capturing them with expressive brush strokes and bright contrasting colours.
His works often begin as watercolour sketches that will later be used to create larger works. Through this process the artist notes the importance of allowing his perceptions and misperceptions to transform and further elaborate on the final works allowing them to feel more real or believable than the sketches. His works can be found in both private and public collections across Canada including The Art Gallery of Algoma’s permanent collection.
