Woodland Mural Art Project
The Woodland Mural Art Project is a community-focused Indigenous youth art initiative led by Indigenous artist and educator, Lucia Laford, teaching traditions of the Woodland Art style.
The Project, facilitated at the Art Gallery of Algoma, engaged 15-20 youth from the Indigenous Friendship Centre (IFC) of Sault Ste. Marie, who were 13-18 years of age, as participants in a series of eight workshops culminating in the creation of a mural to beautify the exterior wall of the Art Gallery of Algoma. Youth were educated in the elements and symbolism of Woodland art and the materials and techniques to create in this traditional style. The location of the mural makes it accessible to visitors and all who walk through the downtown park where the AGA is located.
Participants: Lucia Cameron, Ceana Churchill, Jasper Corbeil, Jamie Coughlin, Lauren Coughlin, Rachel Fetherston, Chloe Hodgins, Isabella Hodgins, Molly MacDonald, Annyssa Miles, Lia Munroe, Charlotte Pinnell-Berry, Teah Roach, Noah Roberts, Vance Trudeau, Kyra Verville, Alice Vosper and Reynelle Wemigwans.

Mural in Progress
The Woodland Mural Art Project is a community-focused Indigenous youth art initiative led by Indigenous artist, Lucia Laford, teaching traditions of the Woodland Art style.
The Art Gallery of Algoma is excited to partner with the Indigenous Friendship Centre (IFC) to create a Woodland style mural on the exterior wall of the AGA under the guidance of Lucia Laford. The project will engage 15-20 Indigenous youth, who are 13-18 years of age (ages 12 and 19 will be considered). This is an all encompassing project and youth must be committed to the full duration of the project which includes 8 evening workshops and 1 week of mural painting. Youth will meet at the AGA every Tuesday and Thursday beginning August 1st from 5-7pm to learn about techniques and symbolism, create their own pieces of Woodland art and brainstorm mural ideas. The mural will be painted on the wall of the AGA August 28 to September 1 from 10am-4pm.
No experience necessary. Snacks and lunch provided. Transportation assistance with Sault Transit is available. The unveiling will take place on National Truth & Reconciliation Day, September 30, 2023.
To register for the workshops and the mural please call the AGA at 705-949-9067 or email at [email protected].
The AGA is leading this project with funding received from the Ontario Arts Council.
