Art Is All Around Us
John C. Leonard (1944 |British Canadian)
Leonard is a Toronto area painter known for his diverse range of subjects. Born in England in 1944, he later immigrated to Canada where he studied the arts at Fleming College in Peterborough and OCAD in Toronto. His work became more known in the art scene in the 70s’ and he became renowned for having three exhibitions at once at the Art Gallery of Ontario, Hart House Art Gallery and the Albert White Gallery. His work combined abstraction and photorealism and can be found in over 40 public galleries and corporate collections including the National Gallery, the Art Gallery of Sarnia and the Art Gallery of Algoma.
Leonard has also taught at many of Ontario’s Universities and art schools including OCAD, University of Toronto and is currently a faculty member of Fleming’s College’s Haliburton School of the Arts. While his past works have often had a more realism approach and been ‘museum scale’, his most recent works have been smaller in scale and focused in landscapes, many of which are reminiscent of the group of seven.
