Art Is All Around Us
Carl Schaefer (1903-1995 | Canadian)
Schaefer was born in Hanover, ON. Schaefer is recognized as one of the country's foremost regionalist painters. This work in our collection, Old Homestead Hanover painted August 6, 1942, has been described as a signature work by the artist, exemplifying the best of his style and technique. Early in his career, Schaefer was inspired by the work of J.E.H. MacDonald and Arthur Lismer and the two Group of Seven painters who had a profound influence on him. They were instructors at the Ontario College of Art so Schaefer enrolled at the College and continued to work under their influence. In 1928 was invited to exhibit a work with the Group of Seven before being employed as a war artist from 1943-1946. Upon his return Schaefer taught art at the Ontario College of Art until 1965.
Old Homestead Hanover was included in a major Schaefer exhibition in 1980, organized by the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) and circulated to major centres across Canada.
