A journey through Algoma from multiple perspectives. For centuries, artists have been inspired by Algoma. The beauty of this area has been translated into their visual interpretation countless times. From Caddy and Armstrong in the 19th century, the Group of Seven in the 20th century, and the many artists who followed, to this day Algoma remains to be an inspiration.

2020 marks the 100th Anniversary of the formation of the iconic Group of Seven. Their first painting trip to Algoma was in September of 1918; many more painting trips followed. A.Y. Jackson owned a cabin in Algoma on the shores of Lake Superior and spent many summers painting here. Casson visited Sault Ste. Marie to officially open the newly built Art Gallery of Algoma in September 1980. Ties to the Group remain strong to this day as many artists follow in their footsteps and make Algoma the subject of their work.
Algoma is a place where the Group of Seven artists found unspoiled nature, unlimited inspiration and experienced the healing power of nature and art. Algoma still holds the same attributes for artists and art lovers today. The landscape, the city, the people, the feelings influenced by this place which some of us are lucky to call home.
With this digital exhibition, we would like to celebrate the Group of Seven and their important mark in Canadian art history and all artists who continue to be inspired by this beautiful part of Canada. We also want to celebrate Algoma itself; its uniqueness, and its distinctiveness depicted through the eyes of artists for centuries.

Celebrating Algoma
This exhibition is a twofold project — to exhibit art from the AGA’s permanent collection as well as a call to artists to submit their art inspired by Algoma and/or Sault Ste. Marie. Artists have submit art about Algoma either as they see it today or from a memory that stayed with them and has a special meaning. Artists have been invited to share their stories about Algoma using any medium of their choice.
