Land Acknowledgement
We would like to begin by acknowledging that we are in Robinson-Huron Treaty territory and that the land on which we are gathered today is the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe, specifically the Garden River and Batchewana First Nations, as well as Métis and Cree Peoples. The AGA is committed to upholding the values of truth and reconciliation and respectfully aligning with the Indigenous community.
It is with great sadness that we received the news today that Mrs. Elsie Savoie passed away. Elsie was instrumental in founding the Art Gallery of Algoma in 1975. It was her dedication, strong will, and hard work that made this Gallery possible.
Over the years Elsie stayed connected with the Gallery and followed closely what was happening. We feel honoured that she continued to support the Gallery and that she was pleased with the developments over the last few years. Her last visit to the Sault when she spent the day at the Gallery was in September of 2017. The article in the Sault Star recorded this visit. We were hoping that she would be part of the 50th Anniversary celebration of the AGA next summer. She will be with us in spirit. We know and value how much the Gallery meant to Elsie Savoie, and we will continue to follow with making her dream of a successful gallery a reality. Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Elsie Savoie. She will continue to live through the Art Gallery of Algoma - as per her words "her baby".
